The Fruits of a County Research Project
-
This short guide to some of the lesser-known legal records of American slavery grew out of my research project in Upson County, Georgia.
-
In 1995, I began extracted all slavery information from all Upson County records, page by page, including dozens of cubic feet of uncataloged loose papers from the courthouse basement at Thomaston, Georgia.
-
Most of these court records are now at the Thomaston-Upson Archives, Thomaston, Georgia:

-
To this data I have added information from non-government records, including church minutes, family papers in archival collections, family Bibles, and business records.
