Edward Means Succession
to
Thomas R. Adams
State of Louisiana Parish of DeSoto * Be it known that before me this day M. W. Holman Recorder and Exofficia Notary Public in and for the Parish of DeSoto State of Louisiana duly commissioned and sworn came and appeared William B. Means Executor of the Succession of Edward Means deceased who declared that for the consideration of Eight hundred and seventy dollars payable as follows to wit: One third cash the balance payable in one and two years from date thereof in equal annual installments secured by promissory notes He does by these presents grant, bargain, sell, convey, transfer, assign and set over with a full guaranty against all trouble, debts, mortgage, claims, evictions, donations, alienations and other in cumbrances whatsoever unto Thomas R. Adams a resident of the Parish of DeSoto and State of Louisiana his heirs and assigns who is here present and accepts the same a certain Negro Boy named Edmund of copper complexion aged about twenty five years; For the security of the payment of said remaining sum the said Adams has executed his two certain promissory notes bearing like date with these presents each for the amount of two hundred and seventy three and 55/100 and signed by Thomas R. Adams as principle and Charles A. Edwards as security bearing eight percent per annum interest from date till paid and in order to identify the same with these present the said Notary have prepare the same __________ above my official signature.
To have and to hold the said Slave Edmund unto the said purchaser his heirs and assigns forever. And the paid Vendor hereby further promises that himself and his heirs shall and will forever warrant and defend the titles to slave herein conveyed against all legal claiming whatsoever the paid Vendor moreover transfer unto said purchaser all the rights and actions of warranty to which he is entitled against all the former proprietors of the slave herein conveyed subjugating said purchaser to all the paid rights and actions to be by him enjoyed and exercised in the same manner as they might have been by the present Vendor and in order to secure the punctual payment as well as the interest and costs that my accrue thereon the Vendor requires and the Vendee consents that the property herein conveyed remain specially mortgaged and hypothecates and shall have the force of a confession. And the purchaser further stipulates and agrees not to alienate the Negro Boy herein named nor encumber in any manner until the full and final payment of the notes mentioned.
Done and passed in my office in the Parish of DeSoto aforesaid in presences of D. Laird, W. Sebastian witnesses of lawful age and domiciliated in this Parish who also signed their name hereunto with the parties and me said Recorder and Notary on this 17th day of February in the year One thousand eight hundred and forty eight (signed) W. Robert F. Whitaker
State of Louisiana Parish of DeSoto * Be it Known that this day before me M. W. Holman Recorder and Exofficio Notary Public in and for the Parish of DeSoto State of Louisiana duly commissioned and sworn came and appeared William B. Means Executor of succession of Edward Means decreased who declared that in the consideration of eight hundred and twenty five dollars payable as follows to wit, one third in cash, the balance payable in one and two years from that date hereof in equal annual installments. He does by these presents grant, bargain, sell, convey, assign and set over with a full guaranty against all troubles, mortgages, debts, claims, convictions, donations, alienations and other encumbrances whatsoever unto Robert F. Whitaker his heirs and assigns who is here present and accepts the same a certain Negro boy named William of dark complexion aged about seventeen years for the security of payment of the said remaining sum the said Whitaker executed his two certain promissory notes bearing like date with these presents each for the sum of two hundred and seventy five dollars and signed by Thomas M. Gilmer as security and in order to identify the same with these presents I said Notary have marked the same to Varictins, above my Official signature .
To have and to hold the said slave William unto the said purchaser his heir and assigns forever And the said Vendor hereby further promises that himself his heir and assigns shall and will in his capacity as Executor forever warrant and defend the title to the slave herein conveyed against legal claims and demands whatever. The said Vendor moreover transfers unto the said purchaser all the rights and actions of warranty to which he is entitled against all the former proprietors of the slave herein conveyed subrogating the said purchaser to the said rights and actions to be by him enjoyed and exercised in the same manner as they might have been by the present Vendor. And in order to secure the punctual payment as well as the interests and costs that may accrue therein the Vendor requires and the Vendee consents that the property herein conveyed shall be specially mortgaged and by hypothecates and have the force and effect of a confession of payment. And the said purchaser further stipulates and agrees not to alienate the property herein conveyed nor to encumber the same in manner until the first formal payment of the sums above mentioned. The said purchaser waives the production of a mortgage certificate from the Recorder of Mortgage in the Parish thereby exonerating me said Notary from my liabilities whatever.
Done and passed in my Office in the Parish of DeSoto aforesaid in presence of C. A. Edwards and Thomas P Hall. State of Louisiana Parish of DeSoto * Be it known that before me this day M. W. Holman Recorder and Exofficia Notary Public in and for the Parish of DeSoto State of Louisiana duly commissioned and sworn came and appeared William B. Means Executor of the Succession of Edward Means deceased who declared that for the consideration of the sum of twenty three hundred and sixty five dollars payable as follows to wit: One third cash and the balance payable in one and two years from date thereof in equal installments secured by promissory notes. He does by these presents grant, bargain, sell, convey, transfer, assign and set over with a full guaranty against all troubles, debts, mortgages, claims, evictions, donations, alienations and other encumbrances whatsoever unto John M. Sandige a resident of the Parish of Bossier and State of Louisiana who is here present accepting and acting for himself the following described slaves, sold as belonging to said Succession, to wit Eunch a fellow of dark complexion about twenty five years of age, Bob a griff about the same age, Patsy a woman of dark complexion about eighteen years of age, and Carlos a fellow of dark complexion, thirty five years of age and it is expressly understood between the Vendor and purchaser that the Vendor does not guaranty the said Boy Carlos to be free from the maladies prescribed by law. And in order to secure the punctual payment of the said remaining sum of Fifteen hundred and seventy six dollars and sixty-two cents. The said John B. Sandige has executed his two certain promissory notes of equal date herewith each for the sum of seven hundred and eighty eight and ______ dollars the one payable twelve months after date and the other two years from date each bearing interest at the rate of eight percent per annum from date until paid which said notes are signed by the said Sandige as principal and Jessee J. Ford and Geo D. Gilmer as securities. The name of George D. Gilmer being signed by the said Sandige by virtue of a special Power of Attorney which is amended to, and made a part of this act and in order to identify the same with these present the said Notary have prepared the same __________ above my official signature.
To have and to hold the said Negro slaves for life unto the said purchaser his heirs and assigns forever. And the said Vendor hereby further promises that himself his heirs shall and will forever warrant and defend the title to the slaves herein conveyed against all legal claims and demands except as above exception. And said Vendor moreover transfer unto the said purchaser all the rights and actions of warranty to which he is entitled against all the former proprietors of the slaves herein conveyed subjugating said purchaser to all the paid rights and actions to be by him enjoyed and exercised in the same manner as they might have been by the present Vendor and in order to secure the punctual payment as well as the interest and costs that my accrue thereon the Vendor requires and the Vendee consents that the property herein conveyed remain specially mortgaged and hypothecates and shall have the force of a confession And the purchaser further stipulates and agrees not to alienate the slaves herein conveyed nor to encumber the same in any manner until the full and final payment of the sums above mentioned. The purchaser fully exonerates me the said Notary from any liabilities for the non-production of the certificate of mortgages from the Recorder of Mortgages for said Parish of DeSoto relative to the property belonging to said Secession

Should Mr. John M. Sandige became the purchaser of property at the sale which you have advertised to take place at Mansfield on the 17th inst and security be required I hereby authorize him the said Sandige to sign my name to any note bon or obligation which it may be necessary for him to give signed originally Geo O Gilmer. State of Louisiana Parish of DeSoto Personally appeared before me M. W. Holman Recorder and Exofficia Notary Public in and for said Parish of DeSoto Thomas M. State of Louisiana Parish of DeSoto * Be it Known that this day before me M. W. Holman Recorder and Exofficio Notary Public in and for the Parish of DeSoto State of Louisiana duly commissioned and sworn came and appeared William B. Means Executor of the succession of Edward Means decreased who declared that for the consideration of the sum of fifteen hundred and seventy one dollars payable as follows to wit, one third in cash the balance payable in one and two years from date hereof in equal annual installments secured by promissory notes He does by these presents grant, bargain, sell, convey, assign and set over with a full guaranty against all trouble, debts, mortgage, claims, evictions, alienation, donations and other encumbearances whatsoever unto James D. Henderson a resident of Caddo Parish, La his heirs and assigns who being here present accepting the same a certain negro woman named Rose aged about thirty years complexion dark, John a boy about nine years complexion yellow, Maz a boy about six years complexion dark, Ephram aged about four years dark complexion. For the security of the payment of the said remaining sum the said Henderson executing his two promissory notes bearing like date with these presents each for the amounts of five hundred and seven dollars and signed by Jacob Smith and Thomas M. Gilmer as securities said notes having eight percent per annum interest from date until paid and in order to identify the said notes with this act of sale I the said Recorder have prepared the same _______ for identity.
To have and to hold the said slaves unto the said purchaser James D. Henderson, his heirs and assigns and the said Vendor thereby further promises that he and his heirs and assigns shall and will forever warrant and defend the title to the said slaves herein conveyed against all legal claims and demands whatever. The said vendor moreover transfers unto the said purchaser all the rights and actions of warranty to which he is entitled against all the former proprietors of the slaves herein conveyed subrogating the said purchaser to the same rights and actions to be by him enjoyed and exercised in the same manner as they might have been by the present Vendor. And in order to secure the punctual payment of the notes herein described the Vendor requirement and the Vendee consented that the property herein conveyed shall remain specially mortgaged and hypothecates and shall have the force and effect of a confession of judgment also to secure the interest and costs that may accrue thereon the purchaser agree not to alienate, convey or encumber the property herein conveyed in any manner, shape or form whatever. The said purchaser waives the production of a mortgage certificate from the Recorder of mortgage in this Parish thereby exonerating me said Recorder Notary from any liabilities whatever.

State of Louisiana Parish of DeSoto * Be it known that before me this day M. W. Holman Recorder and Exofficia Notary Public in and for the Parish of DeSoto State of Louisiana duly commissioned and sworn came and appeared William B. Means Executor of the Succession of Edward Means deceased who declared that for the consideration of the sum of Fifteen hundred and sixty five dollars payable as follows to wit: One third cash and the balance payable in one and two years from date thereof in equal installments secured by promissory notes. He does by these presents grant, bargain, sell, convey, transfer, assign and set over with a full guaranty against all troubles, debts, mortgages, claims, evictions, donations, alienations and other encumbrances whatsoever unto Elijah Sumerall a resident of the Parish and State above mentioned his heirs and assigns who is here present and accepting the same a certain Lot of Negroes to wit, Phil a negro man of copper complexion aged about thirty five years, Betty a negro woman about thirty two years of copper complexion and a negro Boy named Isaace of copper complexion and aged about three years. And in order to secure the payment of the said remaining sum of Ten hundred and forty three and 33/100 dollars the said Sumerall has executed his two certain promissory notes each for the amount of Five hundred and twenty one 66/100 Dollars of even date and drawing interest at the rate of eight percent per annum from date till paid and the said notes signed by Henry L. Williams and Henry Williams as security.
To have and to hold the said Slaves unto the said purchaser Elijah Sumerall his heirs and assigns forever. And the said Vendor hereby further promises that he his heirs shall and will forever warrant and defend the title to the Slaves herein conveyed against all legal claims and demands whatsoever. And the said Vendor moreover transfer unto the said purchaser all the rights and actions of warranty to which he as Executor is entitled against all the former proprietors of the slaves herein conveyed subjugating said purchaser to all the paid rights and actions to be by him enjoyed and exercised in the same manner as they might have been by the present Vendor and in order to secure the punctual payment as well as the interest and costs that my accrue thereon the Vendor requires and the Vendee consents that the Negroes herein conveyed remain specially mortgaged and hypothecates and shall have the force of a confession And the purchaser further stipulates and agrees not to alienate, convey or encumber the negroes herein conveyed until the full and final payment of the notes herein described and purchaser waives the production of a mortgage certificate from the Recorder in this Parish, thereby exonerating me said Notary from any liabilities whatsoever.
Done and passed in my office in the Parish of DeSoto aforesaid in presence of S. P. Jones and ___________ Witnesses of lawful age and domiciliated in this Parish who hereunto sign their names with the parties and me said Recorder and Notary on this the 18th day of February in the year One thousand eight hundred and forty eight.
