WILL OF JOHN SINGLETON In the Name of God, Amen, I John Singleton, Senior, [Planter in the State of South Carolina and District of Sumter being in a low state of health, but of sound and disposing mind, blessed be God for the same and recollecting that is appointed once for all men to die, do make and ordain this to be my last will and testament in manner and form following Viz. I recommend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God and my body to be buried in a decent and Christian like manner at the discretion of my friends and Executors. First, it is my will that all my just debts be paid -- Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto my daughter, Mary Brunson, wife of Isaac Brunson, one Negro woman named Mariah and her increase to her and the lawful heirs of her body forever. Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto my daughter, Nancy Bradford, one Negro man named Lancaster to her and the lawful heirs of her body forever. Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto my daughter, Elizabeth Rose, one Negro man named January to her and the lawful heirs of her body forever. Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto my daughter, Sarah Harvin, one Negro boy named Joe to her and the lawful heirs of her body forever. Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto my son, John R. Singleton, one Negro man named Isaac to him and the lawful heirs of his body forever. Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto my daughter, Harriet Singleton, one Negro girl named Nelly and her increase to her and the lawful heirs of her body forever. Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto my daughter, Emily Singleton, one Negro girl Chloe and her increase to her and the lawful heirs of her body forever. Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto my daughter, Epsy Singleton, one Negro girl named Fanny and her increase to her and the lawful heirs of her body forever. Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto my daughter, Rebecca Singleton, two Negro girls named Lizett and Eady and their increase to her and the lawful heirs of her body forever. Item, I give, devise and bequeath unto my son, William J Singleton, one Negro boy named Henry, and one tract of land containing six hundred and forty acres more or less, originally granted to Joseph Singleton and adjoining lands belonging to the Estate of Spencer Wilder, deceased, to him and the lawful heirs of his body forever. Item, it is my will and desire that the land which lies between the tract of land given by me to John R Singleton and the tract above bequeathed to William J Singleton, be equally divided between my said sons, John and William, supposed to be between one and two hundred acres. It is my will and desire that all the rest and residue of my estate both real
and personal be kept together by my wife, Elizabeth Singleton, for her support
during her natural life, and after her death to be equally divided between all
my children or their lawful heirs. Item, it is my will and desire that if my wife, Elizabeth Singleton, should die before all my young children receive their education, then in that event, there must be a fund sufficient reserved for their education, and that all my young children [Viz] Harriet, Emily, Epsy, William and Rebecca, be supported out of the rest of the property which is to be kept by my wife, Elizabeth Singleton, until they come of age or marry. It is my will and desire that if my death should take place before this crop is made, that the two Negroes devised to Nancy Bradford and Elizabeth Rose named Lancaster and January, be kept on the plantation until it is made and gathered. Lastly, it is my will and desire that if any of my children should die at any time of their life without lawful issue&emdash;that such property given by me to them shall return and be equally divided between my children that should be alive or their heirs. I do, hereby, nominate and appoint Thomas Dugan, William R Harvin, and John R Singleton my Executors to this my last will and testament, hereby revoking and disannulling all other wills heretofore by me made. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this Twenty first day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty four.
