THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF EDWARD MEANS OF THE DISTRICT OF FAIRFIELD AND
STATE AFORESAID Imprimis; I give, devise and bequeath the plantation or tract of land on which I now live, known as the "Buckhead" plantation, together with my carriage and horses, and all the household and kitchen furniture pertaining to the house and premises, and also the following slaves; to wit-Ben and Milbey and Ben's children, Charles and Nelly and their children, - old Adam and wife Sylvia, - and Sylvia, Suckey, Lean and Job, - Polly and her children, - Harrison and Edmond, to my beloved wife Mrs. Claudia Means, for the term of her life or widowhood, for the support of herself and my children, including the said property to serve as a home and maintenance for my said wife and children, until the marriage of the latter respectively; the said property, after the death of my said wife Mrs. Claudia Means, to be equally divided among my children, as directed with respect to the general residue of my estate. It is my will that no inventory or appraisement whatever shall be made of the household or kitchen furniture, in or pertaining to my said house and premises. All the rest and residue of my estate, I direct to be sold, at such time and on such terms, as shall seem advisable to my Executors, and the proceeds, after the payment of my debts to be equally divided among my children as they come of age or marry; the said proceeds, in the mean time to be invested at the discretion of my Executors, provided, that if invested on private security, the interest shall be payable and collected annually. It is my will that each of my daughters have the whole of their portions respectively, settled upon them, and should they or either of them die without ifsue, it is my further will, that the portion of such daughter or daughters, so dying without ifsue, shall revert to my said wife and surviving children. I empower my Executors, if the interest and convenience of my family should require it to sell the "Buckhead" plantation, or any of the property comprised in the first clause of this; my will, and to reinvest the proceeds as may best serve their interest and convenience. I give to my wife, Mrs. Claudia Means, her Executors, Administrators and assigns, the following slaves, to wit Ursly and child and Charlotte and her children. Lastly, I appoint my wife-Mrs. Claudia Means, and my brothers William B Means and John H Means and my nephew T. C. Means Executrix and Executors of this my last will. Signed, sealed, published and declared by the said Edward Means, as and for his last will and Testament this twenty fourth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty seven.
