100 Years Old She Remembers All

New York -- Surrounded by her family and friends, Mrs. Mary Gibson, born a slave in Culpepper County (that's always Virginia) celebrated her 100th birthday Saturday night Feb. 14 at her church, Amity Baptist, in Amityville on Long Island. At her side was a daughter, with whom she lives in Jamaica, Mrs. Cora Lane, lively at 77.

Mrs. Gibson has never seen a movie and hates jazz. "This new music don't make sense," she said. She remembers all of the Civil War. She told of two Confederates stopping at her door for a drink of water. One of them took off his hat, and bowed low, saying, "11th says you are a free woman now and I'd guess I'd better be respectful."
