121 Year Old Former Slave Dies In Mississippi

Hattiesburg, Miss -- Final rites were held here last week for Mrs. Lucinda Carter, who died at the age of 121.

Born a slave in 1825 when the old tobacco and cotton kingdoms were on the decline and the seeds of the Civil War were being sown, Mrs. Carter witnessed political annd social changes in America for over a century.

Mrs Carter lived through four great wars and periods of reconstruction-the Civil War, the Spanish American War, and the first and second World Wars.

She is reported to be survived by more than 250 great-grand-children, and lived to see her fifth generation of descendants.
